Yarn Ball Series

My Yarn Ball Series is a collection of fictional animal portraits set in a dreamscape reality. Through blended media in color pencil and ink, my animals sit in contentment, wrapped in half-finished crocheted creations. Yarn balls float around in the haze, unraveling to form the fabric that brings comfort to their subjects.

The actual creating of these pieces was very reminiscent of actual crocheting. To create the crocheted forms, I slowly built up the color pencil on each yarn knot, as you would crochet each knot individually on the hook. And each animal was built up slowly as well, and in that respect the animal and fabric were created as one, in the same manner. Muscle, vein, fur texture and over all form were created with slow build-up of shadow and color.
